Either a full day of comics creation, or a full day of table top roleplaying, led by highly qualified instructional and supervisory staff.

All fees include a $50 non-refundable fee. No refunds will be made if registration is cancelled after April 24th, 2023. YouthWrite Society Canada reserves the right to cancel courses and restrict enrollment. Courses, instructors and supervisors may be subject to change.

YouthWrite invites superbly talented and reputable instructors who represent the many facets of the performing, visual, musical, dance, film, and written arts. 


 




 Mason Repka (He/They)


Bio

Mason wears many hats. Sometimes they are a writer, a creator, a world builder, a musician, and an artist. Other times they are a game master, facilitating worlds of play, whether it be LARP, D&D, or some other form of roleplay based shenanigans. Sometimes, they are a YouthWrite worker bee, doing communications and administrative work in the YouthWrite office. Still other times they are a homemaker and a cat-dad, and they deeply enjoy spending time working around the house with their partner, Cara, and their cat, Phoebe. This spring, Mason is very excited to wear their instructor and game-master hats simultaneously, and can't wait to lead you through a Table-Top adventure!


Course

Table Top Adventure - Join Mason as your Game Master as they guide you through character creation and lead you on an epic adventure using table top gaming mechanics and writing exercises to build amazing characters, learn to write through roleplay, and craft a narrative world together. We will explore worldbuilding, character writing, backstory, and the art of live collaborative storytelling. Adventure awaits!




 Daniel J Schneider (He/Him)


Bio

Daniel J Schneider is a comic artist, illustrator and storyteller hailing from his family's cattle ranch near Edmonton. He holds the honour of being the first Comic shop Artist in Residence at Happy Harbour Comics and has been privileged to be teaching students about how to create comics for the past 9 years. You can find his work in comics such as Gamesworkshop’s “Reforged”, “The Saga of the Jack of Spades”, “Ape Court” and soon the webtoon Sire & Cub.


Course

Capturing the Mind's Eye -  As comic book artists we're often tasked with creating the characters, places and events a writer's words describe. This class will focus on how we artists take the written word and bring it to life with our artistic interpretation.  We'll all start our visual storytelling with written descriptions, talk about how to read those descriptions effectively, and see where our interpretations take us! 



 Chelsea Wong (She/Her)


Bio

Chelsea Wong (she/her) is an artist who has both a diploma in Fine Arts and one in Digital Illustration. Having experience with both traditional and digital mediums, she has displayed her artwork in exhibitions and conventions in Alberta. In 2018, she self published her silent comic Jezebel and has contributed to multiple zines each year including a yearly Shark charity Zine. In 2022 she became Rolling Tales Pop Culture’s first Artist in Residence continuing Jezebel while helping young comic artists as an informative guide


Course

Square & Circle - Learn more about creating comics by making 4-panel comics with 2 characters. That's right, with with this awesome S&C method, Chelsea will take your characters through development, setting, and conflict all in 4 super panels!


Drawn to Character Coordinator

Tania Gigliotti (She/Her)

Tania is a powerhouse administrator, amazing client services manager, excel wizard, and an adorable little hobbit. She spends her spare time researching youth engagement in living history museums for the Young People are the Future project, as well as reading a lot of good books and eating a lot of good food. She's also Gail's favorite. 



YouthWrite Director-Coordinator

Gail Sidonie Sobat (She/They)


is a multi-award-winning teacher and author, with twelve books for children, teens and adults, and a number of educational and academic articles. A Global News Woman of Vision and an Arts and Culture Citation Award recipient, she is the YouthWrite creator/ coordinator, an international presenter, an instructor in the professional writing program at MacEwan University and in the Faculty of Education at U of A. Gail was The Writers’ Union of Canada Regional Representative for Alberta, NWT and Nunavut, and writer in residence with the Metro Edmonton Federation of Libraries. 


She has moved forty times in her life from Badlands to Siksika Nation Reserve to hideous suburbs to Istanbul to the Sunshine Coast to her writer’s garret in a century-old temperamental house. She adores all of her Supers & Coordinators equally, and loves YouthWrite like a madwoman!
